Immortals After Dark - Series by Kresley Cole

The Ascension is coming - a periodic house-cleaning of immortal races including valkyries, werewolves, vampires, demons, witches, and many more. In order to survive, each race is going to need all the allies it can get. Luckily, the action leading up to the Ascension is throwing all sorts of odd couples together.

Note: I've followed the author's convention for numbering the books, but the first installment (The Warlord Wants Forever) is a short story that can easily be skipped until later without any confusion.

The overarching plot revolves around the upcoming Ascension. Before the Ascension it's common for cross-species romances to help form alliances between different types of immortals.

The supernatural creatures in IAD have a wonderful fresh feel. Unlike many paranormal romance series, the vampires here are mostly evil. The werewolves are really, seriously, fiercely inhuman. The witches are committed mercenaries and the valkyries are - well, valkyries. You don't see those in stories much these days.

The romance is a bit trite but fun enough to read. I don't necessarily recommend reading the entire series back-to-back, even though that's the way I normally do things, because by the end I had a hard time keeping the characters straight.

The sex scenes can get a bit over-the-top, especially later in the series and especially in terms of the males' endowments.
